The Shifting Definition of FDE
Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) lacks a singular, stable definition because it has historically been a catch-all for whatever a company needs to succeed at a customer site. Originating at Palantir, the role began as a DevOps-heavy position focused on platform stability and on-premise deployments. Over time, it expanded to include data integration, ontology modeling, solution architecture, and customer enablement. Because the role has been stretched across so many domains, hiring for it today often results in contradictory job descriptions that demand a mix of staff-level engineering, sales, and solution architecture experience.
The Convergence of Engineering and Outcomes
Despite the lack of a coherent definition, the through-line of FDE is customer accountability. While early FDEs were responsible for keeping systems from crashing, modern FDEs are responsible for delivering business results. This evolution is accelerating due to two factors:
- Coding Agents: As AI makes writing code cheaper and faster, the competitive advantage shifts away from the act of coding and toward the ability to integrate data, understand customer needs, and build end-to-end solutions.
- Outcome-Based Pricing: Traditional SaaS models rely on seat-based pricing, which assumes a tool is being used. As AI agents gain autonomy, the industry is shifting toward outcome-based pricing. This model requires engineers to be directly responsible for the results the software produces (e.g., solving a customer inquiry or closing a sale), which is the natural domain of the forward-deployed engineer.
Agent Engineering as FDE Reborn
What the industry currently calls "Agent Engineering" is essentially FDE under a new name. The distinction between product engineering and customer-facing engineering is blurring; the best product engineers now act like FDEs by staying close to the customer, while FDEs now use AI agents to build and deploy solutions that were previously impossible. Ultimately, the role is becoming a generalist training ground for builders who can bridge the gap between technical capability and business value.
