Building an AI-Native Culture
MUFG’s approach to becoming "AI-native" prioritizes organizational culture alongside technical deployment. Rather than treating AI as a siloed efficiency tool, the bank focuses on integrating it into daily workflows. A critical component of this strategy is the bank-wide rollout of ChatGPT Enterprise, chosen for its enterprise-grade security and governance capabilities, which are essential for a major financial institution. The bank successfully moved internal discourse from "Are we allowed to use AI?" to "How should we apply it to our work?" by appointing departmental "AI champions" to encourage experimentation and peer-to-peer learning.
Mandatory Training and Adoption
To overcome organizational friction, MUFG implemented a mandatory e-learning program that achieved 100% participation among the 35,000 employees receiving accounts. This training established shared standards for safe and effective use, ensuring that employees understood both the capabilities and the regulatory boundaries of the tool. Following this, the bank utilized custom GPT workshops, resulting in the creation of over 1,800 "AI bankers"—customized tools tailored to specific departmental workflows. This initiative has already yielded measurable results, including a 20-30% reduction in workload for specific research and executive reporting tasks.
Reimagining Customer Experience
Beyond internal operations, MUFG is leveraging AI to redefine customer-facing services. The bank is integrating OpenAI technology into its digital banking platforms, including the Moneytree wealth management app and the emutt financial services brand. Planned features include an AI concierge for 24/7 support and the Money Advisory Platform (MAP), which provides personalized financial recommendations based on a customer's life stage. The core philosophy is to use AI to handle routine tasks, thereby freeing human employees to focus on high-value activities like direct customer engagement and complex decision-making.
