Clinical Workflow Integration
OpenAI has launched an integration between ChatGPT Health and Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system, which manages data for over 325 million patients. This integration enables clinicians to import patient records—including appointment notes, lab results, medication lists, and specialist documentation—directly into the AI interface.
Key features include:
- Summarization and Analysis: Clinicians can generate summaries of patient history and identify clinical changes to prepare for upcoming appointments.
- In-Workflow Access: In select systems, the integration allows for pre-visit reviews and the construction of clinical timelines without the clinician needing to leave the patient chart.
- Read-Only Constraints: To maintain data integrity and security, the integration is strictly read-only; the AI is prohibited from writing data back into the EHR.
Data Synthesis and Compliance
Beyond EHR connectivity, OpenAI introduced a Healthcare Public Data plugin designed to aggregate information from authoritative sources such as ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. This tool is intended to assist healthcare workers in synthesizing complex data regarding trial eligibility, medication identifiers, and coverage policies.
For institutional adoption, OpenAI is permitting organizations with a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) to utilize ChatGPT Work, Codex, and associated connectors within their workspaces to support compliant clinical workflows.
Safety and Liability Concerns
While OpenAI reports that testing across 27 clinical use cases—including handoff summaries and medication reviews—resulted in a 99.1% safety rate, the company maintains that its AI tools are not suitable for diagnosis or treatment. This stance follows recent legal challenges, including lawsuits alleging that ChatGPT provided harmful medical advice, highlighting the persistent risks associated with deploying generative AI in high-stakes clinical environments.
