Contextual Commerce and Natural Language Shopping
Shipt, the Target-owned delivery platform, has launched 'Ask Shipt,' an AI assistant designed to move beyond traditional search-based shopping. The tool enables users to generate complete shopping carts using natural language prompts. This shift reflects a broader industry trend among delivery platforms—including Instacart, Uber Eats, and DoorDash—to integrate generative AI directly into the user experience to reduce friction in the path to purchase.
Core Capabilities and Use Cases
The assistant focuses on three primary interaction patterns to simplify grocery procurement:
- Event-Based Planning: Users can request carts for specific scenarios, such as a tailgate for 25 people or a week of school lunches, allowing the AI to handle the item selection process.
- Visual Recognition: The tool supports image uploads, enabling users to identify ingredients from photos of dishes found online or in restaurants and automatically populate a cart with the necessary items.
- Constraint-Based Budgeting: The AI can optimize shopping lists based on specific financial parameters, such as providing meal options for a family of five under a $35 budget.
This rollout aligns with Target's broader strategy to integrate AI across its ecosystem, following previous implementations of AI-powered photo search and automated summaries of customer reviews on Target.com.
