From Direct Instruction to Community Capacity Building

Since its launch in September 2024, OpenAI Academy has focused on bridging the gap between AI access and practical application. Over two years, the initiative has reached 4 million people through 250+ events, including self-paced courses, workshops, and large-scale "AI Skills Jams." The program's core philosophy emphasizes "dedicated time and space" for participants to apply AI tools to their specific professional challenges—such as educators adapting lesson plans or small business owners building research workflows—rather than focusing on theoretical AI concepts.

The New 'Train-the-Trainer' Model

To scale this impact, OpenAI is launching the Community Trainer Program. This pilot shifts the burden of instruction from OpenAI staff to local partners, including schools, workforce development groups, and small-business networks. The program follows a structured path for nominated staff members:

• Curriculum Mastery: Trainers learn the standard Academy materials.
• Facilitation Training: Participants are taught how to guide workshops, demonstrate AI workflows, and foster peer-to-peer learning.
• Assessment: Trainers must complete a formal facilitation assessment before leading sessions independently.

This approach aims to create a sustainable, localized support system where community members have access to trusted, nearby experts who can help them navigate evolving AI tools as their needs change.
