Expanded Model Capability and Tool Integration
Anthropic has updated its voice mode to move beyond the limitations of the Haiku-only architecture. Users can now select between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models, allowing for more complex reasoning and sophisticated conversational tasks such as pitch practice, market research, and communication feedback.
A key differentiator for this update is the ability for Claude to interact with external productivity applications. Users can now perform actions via voice, such as drafting emails in Gmail, updating schedules in Google Calendar, or generating documents in Notion, Canva, and Slack. This positions Claude as a functional agent capable of executing workflows rather than just serving as a conversational interface.
Limitations and Platform Constraints
While the update adds model flexibility and tool access, it does not include underlying improvements to the voice stack itself. Unlike recent updates from competitors, Claude’s voice mode does not feature enhanced interruption handling or improved conversational latency.
Access is currently restricted based on user tier:
- Free users: Limited to the Haiku model and a single connected app.
- Beta availability: The feature is currently in beta across all platforms.
- Multilingual support: While the voice mode supports 10 languages (including French, German, Hindi, Japanese, and Spanish), users must manually specify the language, as automatic detection is not yet implemented.
